Nestled amidst a heavily forested landscape dotted with massive granite boulders, the Gathering House seamlessly integrates into its natural surroundings. The program includes a lounge and multi-use event space for residents of the area, providing ample opportunities for community engagement and fostering a sense of belonging. The building's design, characterized by an open floor plan framed by glass and heavy timber members, fosters a harmonious connection between the interior and exterior spaces. The transparency between programmatic elements create an inviting and dynamic environment, perfectly suited for relaxation and socializing.
The layout of the building was heavily influenced by the location of the large boulders, which were individually surveyed and then digitally recreated in 3D to ensure the precise placement of each building element. Views to and from the boulders were an integral part of the architectural design, framed by a double-height window wall enclosure system. These significant environmental elements also influenced the selection of stone as the primary material for all solid walls along the back-of-house spaces and landscape walls.
